Fostoria Industries offers a complete and varied line of electric infrared process heating equipment for meeting the needs of a variety of process heating applications. Most o Fostoria electric infrared equipment is of modular design. This allows great flexibility for arranging the sections in a variety of configurations to conform to the particular requirements of an application. The modular sections may also be easily incorporated into existing production lines or machinery; wherever heat is needed. Most of the infrared sections and heat sources shown in this manual are available for immediate delivery.

900 SERIES SECTIONS
Fostoria 900 series sections offer a number of unique design features which have made them one of the most widely used infrared sections in the industry today.

Rugged Construction .... Efficient Design
All 900 series sections are designed and constructed to provide dependable service and long life in industrial applications. All section shells are 18 gauge steel with sturdy welded construction and coated with a baked enamel.

The rear portion of the section contains a secondary wall which serves as an insulating barrier. The secondary wall is often filled with insulation to retain convective heat within the oven and increase the oven efficiency. An open space between the reflector and secondary wall serves as an airway for forced or natural air movement to cool the source terminals and wiring.

Wide Range of Sizes
The 900 series sections are available in a wide range of sizes to meet the physical size requirements of various applications.
  • Three widths - 5-½", 11" ad 16-½"
  • Seven lengths - 11", 16", 22", 31", 44", 55", and 66"
All 900 series sections are 7" deep

Easy to Mount and/or Join Together
All 900 series sections can accommodate one or more heat sources. In addition, they can accommodate any of the three different linear heat sources available from Fostoria...quartz lamps, quartz tubes or metal sheath rods. All heat sources are available in a variety of wattages and voltages.

Highly Efficient, Optically Designed Reflectors
The standard reflectors used in 900 series sections are optically designed to provide uniform heat distribution to the product. Fostoria also offers narrow beam reflectors designed to localize heat in a small specific area and controlled angular beam reflectors which are designed to direct a concentrated heat pattern at a given angle.

All 900 series reflectors provide high reflectivity of infrared energy; resist corrosion, heat and moisture; and are easily cleaned using nonabrasive liquid cleaners.

Reflectors are available in three different materials:

  • Gold porcelain for high temperature applications up to 900°F..approximately 95% efficient.
  • Gold anodized aluminum for applications up to 600°F, approximately 85% efficient.
  • Hi-density refractory board.

Electrical Wiring ... Socket Connections
All 900 series sections are equipped with sturdy, ceramic sockets that provide an easy, positive method for connecting the heat source leads. Heat sources can be wired in series, parallel or in any combination to suit processing and control requirements. Wire leads may be brought out of the sections through knockouts on the ends or backsides, or they may be contained in wireways inside the sections.

Controlled Angular Beam
One of the advantages of infrared heating is the ability to direct the infrared waves by optically designed reflectors.

Fostoria has provided Controlled Angular Beam models for several years. Now, the variety of models has been expanded. They include units 5-½", 11" and 16-½" wide, in all lengths as described previously. Models using gold porcelain reflectors are not available. To order controlled angular beam models, substitute the number "21" for the last two digits in any of the cataloged models with the exceptions as mentioned. Example: Model 9522201, which is 16½" wide and uses three 5-½" wide gold anodized reflectors, can be purchased with Controlled Angular Beam reflectors by changing the model number to 9522221.

A variety of heating jobs throughout the industry require that the heat be "localized" so that it can be applied without detriment to adjacent areas of the product; that it can be concentrated with the minimum number of heat sources; and that it can be applied economically.

F Series Sections
Medium Wave Quartz Faced Panels

The "F" Series is best defined by flexibility, efficiency and durability. Dimensionally, the heater can be as wide as 30" and as long as 72". It can be ordered as a 240, 480 or 600 volt unit with a maximum watt density of 25 wsi. Radiant efficiency is about 80%. The heater is very rugged in design and has a life expectancy of 25,000 hours. This medium-wave emitter can be applied to many applications, and is especially effective for thermoforming processes.

F Series Emitter - 5-½" wide models - 7" deep with one 5-½" wide reflector for NARROW BEAM HEATING

Narrow Beam
Fostoria's narrow-beam sections have a specially contoured reflector which produces a 2" wide band of heat when the product is positioned 2" from the section. Obviously, product temperatures will vary with the product characteristics, the line speed and other circumstances.

Narrow Beam Reflector models are available with Gold Anodized Aluminum reflectors only. To order narrow beam sections change the last two digits of any of the cataloged models to "31".

Metal Sheath Heater Sections
Sections for utilizing metal sheath heating elements are available in all series. These sections have porcelain insulated end caps and center rod supports. To order sections for metal sheath heater elements, change the sixth digit in any model number from 0 to 1. Example: Model 9121102 for quartz lamps or quartz tubes would become 9121111 if one metal sheath element is to be used or 9121112 for two metal sheath elements.

Mitey Midget Series
Single Element Heaters

The Fostoria Mitey Midget sections provide a means for applying infrared heat in confined spaces and for uniform heat across webs. They can be installed in areas where only a 5" height is available and assembled side-by-side and end-to-end to form heating banks. A metal guard, easily attached to the reflector, is available as an accessory.

Heating jobs that have extreme space limitations and require heat densities of up to 4 kilowatts per square foot can use the M-Power to its advantage.

Simple 4 piece construction
1) The main part of the Mitey Midget unit is a section of extruded aluminum alloy which serves as the reflector housing.

2) & 3) An aluminized steel wiring box is attached to each end of the extrusion to contain the socket and wiring connections.

4) A gold anodized aluminum reflector insert slides into the aluminum extrusion to provide high level reflection. Ibis insert can be easily cleaned to maintain reflective efficiency or if necessary, removed and replaced with a new insert.

Mounting, there are two methods...
1) The back of each wiring box has two slotted 5/16" holes on top to permit attachment of various metal supports for multiple assembly of units and for oven contouring. Since the sections may expand as much as 3/8" when energized, be sure to allow for this expansion when using these holes for mounting.
2) Each section has two 1/4 x 20 nuts that slide into any location in a track extruded in the back and extending the full length of the section body.

Electrical
A ceramic socket in each end wiring box has a terminal for attaching the lead wire from the heat source and for incoming .wiring connections. This is recognized as a UL accepted method.

Three 7/8" service entrances with knockout covers are in each end wiring box .... one on each side and one on top ... suitable for lock nut and bushing combination on a connector and a 1/2" conduit and/or conduit nipple.

Flexibility
Mitey Midget sections provide maximum flexibility by accommodating a variety of linear electric heat sources including Fostoria quartz tube sources, metal rods and T-3 lamp sources in the following voltages: 120, 240, 480, 600.

Mitey Midget Series
U-Shaped Metal Rods

The Fostoria U-Rod Mitey Midget section has been designed especially for applications which require a rugged heat source in a confined space. It utilizes a low profile aluminum extrusion reflector housing that can be installed in areas where only a 5" height clearance is available. They can be assembled side-by-side and end-to-end to form heating banks that can provide heat densities of up to 4.5 KW per square foot per side.

It is constructed for applications where the heat source may be subject to physical abuse. The U-Shaped metal rod heat sources can withstand appreciable physical and thermal shock without breaking. Metal source guards, easily attached to the reflector, are available for applications where the source may be exposed to extreme abuse.

Construction
1) The main part of the Mitey Midget unit is a section of extruded aluminum alloy which serves as the reflector housing. Multiple reflector models using up to 6 reflectors and U-shaped metal rod heat sources are available.

2) An aluminized steel wiring box is attached to one end of the extrusion containing the socket and wiring terminations. This simplifies installation and wiring of the sources and enables the sections to be used for applications where access to both ends of the section may be limited.

3) A gold anodized aluminum reflector insert slides into the aluminum extrusion to provide high level reflection. This insert can be easily cleaned to maintain reflective efficiency or if necessary, removed and replaced with a new insert.

Mounting
Each section has two 1/4"x 20" nuts that slide into any location in a track extruded in the back and extending the full length of the section reflector. This permits simple mounting of the section by bolting to metal supports.

Electrical
Incoming electrical wires to energize the section are connected directly to the terminals on the heat sources. There are no separate sockets necessary for electrical hook-up and all wiring is at one end of the section. A variety of different wattages and voltages of metal rod heat sources are available to provide compatibility with existing electrical service.

Three 7/8" service entrance knockouts are in each terminal box (one on each side and one on top). These are suitable for a lock nut and bushing combination on a connector and a 1/2" conduit and/or conduit nipple.
